The Clackamas County Traffic Safety Commission has appointed Gladstone trial attorney Kate Stebbins to a three-year term.
Stebbins, an Oregon native, will start her term in August. Stebbins said she hopes to reduce the number of traffic accidents by serving on the commission.
The traffic safety commission , founded in 1980, is a citizen board that consists of up to 12 Clackamas County residents and one or more high school members. The board centers on programs and projects that address the “5E approach to safety,” which includes engineering, education, enforcement, emergency services and evaluation.
It is part of a collaborative approach that draws from these key areas associated with traffic safety. Its focus includes concepts like driver education, pedestrian and bicycle safety, monitoring of high crash locations, school bus safety, and the impact of alcohol and drug use on traffic safety.
As an attorney, Stebbins fights for compensation for pedestrians, cyclists and auto drivers injured by other drivers. She previously prosecuted criminal cases as a deputy district attorney in Multnomah and Hood River counties.
Her interest in traffic safety goes back to when she attended law school. She worked with traffic and transportation planners at Kittelson & Associates, Inc. while taking classes through the night program at Northwestern School of Law.
She later clerked for a worker’s compensation plaintiff attorney and began trying cases as a certified law student at the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
Stebbins is a member of the American Association for Justice, Oregon State Bar, Oregon Trial Lawyers Association, Clackamas County Bar Association and Multnomah County Bar Association.
